HC Davos Signs Rasmus Asplund
In a recent announcement, HC Davos has secured the services of Rasmus Asplund, a 27-year-old Swedish forward, by signing him to a two-year deal. The club’s sports director, Jan Alston, praised Asplund as a quintessential two-way center who excels in various aspects of gameplay, highlighting his impressive hockey IQ and speed on the ice.
Asplund’s Career Highlights
Asplund developed his skills at Färjestad BK in Karlstad, Sweden, where he turned professional before he turned 20. His talent caught the attention of the NHL as he was selected in the second round, 33rd overall, by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2016 Draft. Over his NHL career, which spanned from 2019 to 2025, he played 189 games for the Sabres, Nashville Predators, and Florida Panthers. During this time, he accumulated 49 points and 22 penalty minutes. His most productive season came in 2021-2022 when he achieved 27 points across 80 matches with Buffalo. Additionally, he represented Sweden at the IIHF World Championship in Finland in the spring of that year.
In the 2024-2025 season, Asplund encountered challenges, remaining scoreless in six NHL games with the Panthers, although he did impress in the AHL, tallying 52 points in 81 games for the Charlotte Checkers, who progressed to the Calder Cup finals.
HC Davos’ Future Plans
Meanwhile, HC Davos, known for hosting the prestigious Spengler Cup annually, aims to bounce back after finishing fifth in the National League standings and facing elimination in the semifinals last season. Alongside Asplund, the roster for the 2025-2026 season will also feature former NHL players Brendan Lemieux, Joakim Nordström, Filip Zadina, and Klas Dahlbeck.
Additional Signings and Tournament Updates
In related news, HC Davos also announced the signing of Canadian left winger Brendan Lemieux, 28, to a multi-year contract, marking a strategic move for the club ahead of the new season.
The Spengler Cup organizers recently revealed the six competing teams for the upcoming tournament, which will include for the first time a selection of U.S. collegiate players. This addition highlights the growing diversity of talent in international hockey tournaments, offering a platform for emerging athletes.
