The New York Rangers and Artemi Panarin
The New York Rangers are prioritizing the health of star forward Artemi Panarin amid ongoing trade discussions ahead of the NHL’s March 6 deadline. Sources have indicated that the team will not include him in their lineup until after the Olympic break, a precautionary measure related to roster management. This information was shared with The Associated Press by an anonymous insider, as the organization has yet to formally disclose Panarin’s situation.
Panarin’s Trade Value
Panarin, who is 34 and a significant asset in the trade market, is currently the most prominent free agent on the horizon. With a hefty salary cap hit of $11.6 million and a full no-movement clause, any potential trade will require Panarin’s approval on his destination.
Performance and Team Strategy
Since joining the Rangers on an $81.5 million contract in 2019, Panarin has consistently been a top performer, leading the team in scoring each season, and this year is no different with his tally of 19 goals and 38 assists over 52 games. However, the team’s underwhelming performance under new head coach Mike Sullivan has prompted general manager Chris Drury to hint at a roster overhaul.
In a letter to fans shared on January 16, Drury promised a change of course for the Rangers, clarifying that the focus will not be on rebuilding but rather on retooling.
This strategy aims to maintain the core of established players while also pursuing the addition of young talent and draft picks to enhance future flexibility.
Recent Trades and Future Outlook
Earlier this week, the Rangers initiated their retooling efforts by trading depth defenseman Carson Soucy to the New York Islanders, marking only the fourth trade ever with their crosstown rivals. As the team navigates this transitional phase, most players—excluding key figures like goaltender Igor Shesterkin, defenseman Adam Fox, and prospect Gabe Perreault—are considered tradeable assets at the right offer.
