Rangers Head Coach Mike Sullivan Envisions Making Use of Mika Zibanejad on the Wing Alongside J.T. Miller

New York Rangers Training Camp Overview

In Tarrytown, New York, the upcoming training camp represents a pivotal moment for the New York Rangers, especially under the helm of new head coach Mike Sullivan. Sullivan, who is eager to reshape a team that failed to reach the playoffs last year, has made efforts to connect with his players during the offseason, including a visit to Sweden to meet with center Mika Zibanejad. During this visit, Sullivan learned of Zibanejad’s strong rapport with J.T. Miller, the newly appointed team captain.

Coaching Strategy and Player Positioning

As camp kicks off on Thursday, Sullivan plans to position Zibanejad, a player who has primarily played at center throughout his NHL tenure, on the right wing alongside Miller. Sullivan articulated his reasoning in a press conference held alongside General Manager Chris Drury:

“Since these players are vital to our team’s success, it is logical to start them together and evaluate their performance as we progress. This approach seems intuitively correct for us at this stage.”

Sullivan’s arrival comes on the heels of a disappointing season that led to the dismissal of former coach Peter Laviolette, who had guided the Rangers to the Eastern Conference Finals just a season prior. Sullivan understands the importance of his role in maximizing the talent present on the roster. Drury emphasized Sullivan’s proactive efforts in establishing communication and relationships with the players as a foundation for a successful training camp.

“The time and effort he has devoted to these relationships will pay off as we gear up to start camp,”

remarked Drury.

Building a Competitive Roster

With a distinguished coaching history that includes winning two Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Sullivan is also familiar with some members of his current roster, having coached Miller, Vincent Trocheck, and Adam Fox previously at the 4 Nations Face-Off.

Sullivan’s strategy for success will necessitate more than just rolling out Zibanejad and Miller together. He will also be counting on defensemen like Fox and newly signed Vladislav Gavrikov to solidify the blue line, alongside goaltender Igor Shesterkin, who is expected to be key to the team’s performance. However, making Zibanejad’s move from center to wing may create a gap in what could potentially be a formidable group of centers. Sullivan reflected on this conundrum, stating:

“Theoretically, with Zibanejad, Miller, and Trocheck in the center positions, we have an outstanding trio. The challenge lies in complementing them with capable wingers to ensure overall team balance and success.”

Looking Ahead

The Rangers begin their regular season on October 7 against none other than the Penguins, the team that Sullivan has recent ties with. How the Rangers adapt to Sullivan’s new lineup strategies remains to be seen as they strive to reclaim their former glory.
