Buffalo Sabres Prospect Overview
In recent years, the Buffalo Sabres were celebrated for having one of the most promising groups of prospects in the NHL. However, as key players such as Zach Benson, Devon Levi, and JJ Peterka transitioned into the NHL or aged out, the team’s prospect status has shifted.
Current Rankings
Currently, only three Sabres prospects feature in The Athletic‘s latest Top 100 Drafted Prospects list, with none breaking into the top ten. The highest-ranked player for the Sabres is Radim Mrtka, who was drafted ninth overall last month and sits at number 17. This 18-year-old defenseman stands out in the rankings, positioned alongside more experienced right-handed defensemen like Simon Nemec of New Jersey and Axel Sandin-Pellikka of Detroit.
Scott Wheeler of The Athletic highlighted Mrtka’s impressive skills, noting, “He doesn’t have some of the kinks you expect a D his size and age to have. I think his ceiling is quite high. His skating and calm with the puck are both very rare attributes in a player of his stature.”
Other Notable Prospects
Following Mrtka, the Sabres’ 2024 top pick, Konsta Helenius, is ranked 52nd. Helenius made a successful transition to North America and was recognized as an AHL All-Rookie team member at just 18 years old. Meanwhile, 21-year-old Noah Ostlund ranks as the third Sabres prospect on the list, having accumulated 36 points (19 goals, 17 assists) in 45 games with the AHL’s Rochester Americans. Ostlund also had a brief eight-game stint with the Sabres at the end of last season, showcasing his potential and readiness for the NHL.
