Spain’s Alexia Putellas Prepares for European Championship
As Spain gears up for the European Championship, Alexia Putellas is eager to showcase her growth as a player following a formidable setback. The talented midfielder, who plays for Barcelona, endured a frustrating period after suffering a torn ACL just before the previous tournament in England three years ago, which kept her out of action for nearly a year.
Personal and Athletic Growth
Now at 31, Putellas expresses confidence in her evolution, stating,
“I’m a better Alexia now.”
Reflecting on her journey during a press briefing at Spain’s training camp in Madrid, she emphasized that the pain from her long recovery has ultimately led to personal and athletic growth.
“I understand myself much better now, including my strengths and the areas for improvement,”
she explained. Putellas believes that overcoming challenges has equipped her to handle pressure more effectively and appreciate her successes. With anticipation high for the upcoming Euros in Switzerland next month, she is focused on making a significant contribution to the team.
Return to Form
Having won the prestigious Ballon d’Or consecutively in 2021 and 2022 right before her injury, Putellas has since resumed her top form, netting 22 goals in 39 appearances for Barcelona this past season. This performance has reignited discussions about her standing in the Ballon d’Or rankings, especially after Barcelona secured a domestic double, despite a loss in the Champions League final against Arsenal.
However, her primary focus remains on the Euros and wiping away the disappointment caused by her previous injury.
“I won’t hide it; I have been thinking about this tournament ever since I was injured just before the last one,”
she remarked.
Expectations and Competition
Spain enters the competition with high expectations, having recently clinched a comeback victory against England. Nevertheless, Putellas is cautious and downplays the favorites’ tag often placed upon them.
“We hold ourselves to high standards, but there is stiff competition with other top teams like England, Germany, France, and Italy, among others,”
she pointed out, acknowledging the caliber of opponents they will face.
Spain’s journey to the Euro 2025 title kicks off with a friendly showdown against Japan later this week, followed by their opening match against Portugal in Group B on July 3, with Belgium and Italy also in the mix.
