Provisional Suspension for Olympic Champion

Lazizbek Mullojonov, who claimed victory in heavyweight boxing at the Paris Olympics, faces provisional suspension following a positive test for a banned substance. The International Testing Agency (ITA) has reported that the 26-year-old athlete from Uzbekistan tested positive for methasterone, a substance known for its ability to enhance muscle growth and strength, during an out-of-competition drug test conducted on June 11.

Details of the Positive Test

In an official statement released Tuesday, the ITA indicated that Mullojonov is aware of the situation and has been given the option to request testing of his B-sample. Should he choose to do so and the results affirm the findings of the A-sample, it would lead to a confirmed breach of anti-doping regulations. Conversely, if he opts not to have the B-sample analyzed, the case will still proceed as an established violation.

Opportunity for Explanation

The agency has assured that Mullojonov will have the chance to offer an explanation regarding the positive test results. In addition to his Olympic title, the boxer also secured a bronze medal in the heavyweight division at the 2023 IBA World Boxing Championships and previously won a gold medal in the super heavyweight category at the 2022 Asian Amateur Boxing Championships.

Response from the Uzbekistan Boxing Federation

The Uzbekistan Boxing Federation has been approached for their perspective on this unfolding situation.
