Premier League to Enhance Broadcasts with Substituted Player Interviews and Dressing Room Access

New Premier League Coverage Format

Starting from the 2025-26 season, viewers tuning into Premier League matches can look forward to an exciting new format that includes more immersive coverage of games. British broadcasters are enhancing their offerings to keep pace with American sports networks, incorporating innovative features such as interviews with players who have been substituted, as well as increased access to dressing rooms and pitch-side celebrations during games.

TV Rights Agreement

This initiative comes on the heels of a landmark £6.7 billion TV rights agreement announced in December 2023, which will enable Sky Sports to air 215 Premier League matches annually, while TNT Sports will continue broadcasting 52 matches each season. As part of the changes, audiences will now get real-time insights from substituted players, a practice that was successfully piloted by Sky Sports in October 2024 with Bournemouth’s Marcus Tavernier discussing his thoughts after coming off the field during a match against Southampton.

Access and Privacy

Although this close-up access promises to enrich the viewing experience, it appears that certain elements, such as team talks by managers, will remain private and not accessible to media. In recent years, the Premier League has gradually allowed broadcasters more engagement with players and coaching staff. A regulation introduced in 2022, for example, permitted interview requests with team managers or coaches during half-time, though participation remains at their discretion.

Patrick Vieira, during his tenure as head coach of Crystal Palace, utilized this opportunity for a quick interview, marking a significant step towards heightened interaction between media and teams during the game.

Fan Expectations

As the league prepares for these substantial updates, fans are eager to see how this will transform their viewing experience, providing a deeper connection to players and the game itself.
