Premier League CEO Declares No Need for International Matches to Boost Global Presence

by August 13, 2025

Premier League’s International Strategy

Richard Masters, the Chief Executive of the Premier League, has stated that the necessity for the league to host matches abroad to enhance its international presence has significantly diminished. This perspective contrasts sharply with the league’s earlier considerations to introduce a 39th match round overseas, proposed back in 2008 amidst considerable debate.

Current Trends in European Football

Masters shared these insights during an interview with Sky Sports News on Wednesday, emphasizing that despite other European leagues, such as LaLiga and Serie A, pursuing games in the U.S. and Australia, respectively, the Premier League has successfully established its global brand through alternative strategies.

“The initial urgency to introduce games abroad has faded.”

LaLiga’s Plans for International Matches

Spain’s LaLiga will see clubs like Villarreal and Barcelona attempt to stage their upcoming match in Miami just before Christmas. The Spanish Football Federation has indicated its support for this move, though it is still contingent on getting approval from UEFA and CONCACAF. Meanwhile, opposition has emerged from fan groups associated with both clubs, as well as from Real Madrid, who argue that all teams in Spain’s top league should provide consent prior to any such initiatives.

Serie A’s International Aspirations

In Italy, AC Milan and Como have sought the green light for a Serie A match in Australia planned for February, and while they have received approval from the Italian Football Federation, the case remains under review by Football Australia.

Premier League’s Growth Through Alternative Channels

Masters elaborated that rather than relying on overseas matches for growth, the Premier League has made significant inroads via strong broadcast partnerships, innovative digital initiatives, and events like the recent Summer Series held in the U.S. With billions of viewers expected to engage with the league throughout the next season, he believes the goal of global expansion has been effectively achieved through these various channels.

“The Premier League’s international standing is stronger than ever.”
