Potential Return of Alexander Romanov Boosts Islanders’ Playoff Hopes for 2026

Romanov’s Potential Return for the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs

New York Islanders defenseman Alexander Romanov might return in time for the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, as indicated by general manager Mathieu Darche. Romanov underwent surgery on November 18 due to a right shoulder injury, leading to the initial expectation that his recovery would extend into the playoffs. However, his healing process seems to have accelerated.

Darche noted after the latest NHL trade dealings, “Romy is doing really, really well. There’s a potential for him to make it back for the playoffs, or at least very early within them. His progress has been impressive so far.”

Even though his return for the playoffs was once considered unlikely, it remains a possibility as he continues his rehabilitation.

Current Status and Salary Cap Implications

As for his fitness for the postseason roster, Romanov has resumed skating and taking shots, although the timeline for his full return hasn’t shifted significantly. Adjustments to the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement regarding playoff roster requirements imply that the Islanders must manage their salary cap effectively to accommodate Romanov’s $6 million cap hit. Currently, they have $3,521,236 in available cap space, which must cover all players on the team.

If Romanov rejoins the lineup, it’s possible he would play alongside Scott Mayfield, displacing Carson Soucy on the left side. Based on the current roster configuration, the cap hit for the Islanders’ playoff squad would total approximately $85.89 million, leaving them just under the $95.5 million salary cap threshold.

Team’s Competitive Position

The Islanders find themselves in a competitive position, currently tied for second in the Metropolitan Division with only 19 games remaining in the regular season.

As this situation develops, all eyes will undoubtedly be on Romanov’s recovery and the impact of his potential return on the team’s playoff aspirations.
