Thrilling Finish at the San Felipe Stakes

In a thrilling finish at the $200,000 San Felipe Stakes held in Arcadia, California, Potente narrowly triumphed over longshot Robusta, clinching victory by a mere head. This significant win adds another promising contender for the upcoming Kentucky Derby to Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert‘s roster.

Race Details

Guided by jockey Juan Hernandez, Potente completed the 1 1/16 mile race in a respectable time of 1:42.92, securing his second victory in as many races. He paid out $18.20 for a win, alongside payouts of $8.40 and $5.00 for place and show bets, respectively, as an 8-1 contender. Robusta, taking the second spot, offered generous returns of $33.60 to win and $9 for place. The race’s second favorite, So Happy, ridden by veteran jockey Mike Smith, finished third and paid $2.40 to show.

Trainer and Jockey Insights

Potente, who was a recent $2.4 million auction purchase by owner Speedway Stable, is attributed with remarkable potential, as noted by Hernandez.

“This horse has a lot of talent. He’s big, he’s strong, and he showed up today,”

he noted. Notably, he is undefeated in his career thus far after winning his debut sprint at Santa Anita last month.

Post-Race Reflections

In the field, Secured Freedom finished fourth, while Baffert’s heavily favored Brant, who was 4-5, crossed the finish in fifth, losing steam near the end. Baffert reflected on the pace of the race, acknowledging it was brisk and suggesting Brant may have needed additional preparation for this event.

“He got tired. Potente is bred to go that far. He was ready for that,”

Baffert commented.

Looking Ahead to the Kentucky Derby

With this victory, Potente secured 50 qualifying points towards the Kentucky Derby scheduled for May 2, with Baffert indicating that the colt will have one more race before the Derby. Robusta gained 25 points, while Brant earned 15, with the fourth and fifth placed horses also receiving points toward their qualifications.

Doug O’Neill, who has previously won the Kentucky Derby twice, expressed excitement for Robusta’s future, stating plans to aim for the Santa Anita Derby on April 4 as a precursor to the Kentucky Derby. Owned and bred by Calumet Farm, which boasts a historical record of eight Derby wins (but last won in 1991), Robusta’s performance today has set a promising tone for the upcoming races.

“He ran huge. Let’s go!”

O’Neill enthusiastically declared.

Will Potente continue to impress as the Derby approaches? Only time will tell, but the stage is set for an exciting journey to the first Saturday in May.
