Honoring Eusébio
Portugal’s national football team is set to honor the memory of Eusébio, the revered forward known as the “Black Panther,” by donning a specially designed kit during an upcoming World Cup qualifying match. Eusébio, a monumental figure in Portuguese sports history who passed away in 2014, played a pivotal role in shaping the national team’s presence in the 1960s and 70s. The new kit commemorates the 60th anniversary of his historic Ballon d’Or win in 1965, the first ever for a Portuguese player.
Eusébio’s Legacy
Having scored over 700 goals throughout his career, Eusébio is celebrated not only for his athletic prowess but also as Benfica’s linchpin, leading them to 11 league titles and a memorable European Cup victory in 1962 against Real Madrid, where he scored in a thrilling 5-3 final. His remarkable record with the national team stood for years; he netted 41 goals in 64 appearances. This feat was surpassed only in recent years by players like Pauleta and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Tribute Kit
The tribute kit, crafted by Puma in collaboration with Eusébio’s family, features a luxurious black design adorned with elegant gold accents, reflecting the regal nature of his legacy. Flora Bruheim, Eusébio’s widow, expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the homage, stating it would have delighted her late husband.
Notably, the kit will include the iconic No. 13, which Eusébio wore, and will be available in a limited edition of 1,965 authentic replicas. The Portuguese national team is set to showcase this tribute on November 16, during their match against Armenia in Porto, further solidifying Eusébio’s impact on Portuguese football and his enduring legacy within the sport.
