Arrest in Online Harassment Case
A 59-year-old man has been taken into custody by law enforcement as part of an inquiry into the online harassment aimed at England footballer Jess Carter during the recent Women’s European Championships. The suspect was apprehended in Great Harwood on Thursday morning on allegations of sending malicious communications linked to the distressing messages directed at Carter. Following his arrest, he has been released while investigations continue, according to a statement from police.
Police Response and Statements
Mark Roberts, Chief Constable of Cheshire Constabulary and the lead for football policing at the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), condemned the messages Carter received as “appalling” and praised her courage in cooperating with the investigation. He stressed that such vile behavior is unacceptable and expressed hope that this arrest would be the first of many as authorities work to hold offenders accountable.
Roberts affirmed that the police would not permit individuals to hide their identities behind social media platforms when committing acts of abuse. Dan Fish, a police constable with Lancashire Police, echoed this sentiment, asserting that the force will relentlessly pursue those engaging in hate speech, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring accountability.
Jess Carter’s Experience
Earlier, Carter spoke publicly about the overwhelming abuse she faced during the tournament, revealing the psychological toll it took on her performance. She recounted her feelings of fear upon being selected to play in the Euro final against Spain, where England ultimately triumphed in a penalty shootout to retain the championship title.
“It was the first time I’ve ever felt scared; scared to play,”
she admitted, highlighting the anxiety stemming from concerns about potential backlash, particularly racial abuse, based on her performance.
Football Association’s Commitment
Mark Bullingham, the chief executive of the Football Association, previously stated that they had acted swiftly to alert UK police upon learning of the abuse directed at Carter, pledging that justice would be pursued for those involved in this hate crime. Reflecting on the effects of the harassment, Carter expressed that it diminishes one’s sense of self-worth and confidence, impacting both her and her family’s emotional well-being.
