Mauricio Pochettino’s Aspirations

Mauricio Pochettino, the head coach of the United States men’s national soccer team (USMNT), has openly expressed nostalgia for the English Premier League, indicating intentions to eventually make his way back to the iconic league. Appointed in September 2024 following a brief tenure at Chelsea, Pochettino is currently focused on preparing the U.S. for the 2026 World Cup, which will occur across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Reflections on the Premier League

In an interview with the BBC, Pochettino remarked on the Premier League’s prestige, stating,

“The Premier League is the best league in the world. I am so happy in America but also thinking one day to come back to the Premier League. It’s the most competitive league.”

He is particularly known for his successful stint with Tottenham Hotspur, where he guided the team to a Champions League final and contention for two league titles. Reflecting on his time at Tottenham, he noted,

“We were so close in Tottenham, we nearly touched it [winning a major trophy]. That is a thing that I would want to achieve.”

Commentary on Spurs and Messi’s Impact

The coach also gave commentary on the recent departure of long-serving Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who left his position in September 2024, having spent 24 years at the helm. Pochettino expressed his surprise at this development, stating,

“His legacy is there. It’s amazing what he did for the club,”

highlighting the positive relationship they shared.

Additionally, Pochettino touched on the influential presence of Lionel Messi in the MLS, where the Argentine superstar joined Inter Miami in 2023 and recently renewed his contract. He believes that Messi’s arrival is having a profound impact on the youth in America, inspiring them to take up soccer alongside other popular American sports.

Commitment to Growing Soccer in America

As the USMNT prepares for the upcoming World Cup on home soil, Pochettino recognizes the immense responsibility to help grow soccer within the United States. He conveyed a driving passion and emphasized the need to connect with American players on cultural grounds, stating,

“We need to translate the culture of football to the American player. I think after one year we are making great progress.”

With a vision focused on victory and competition, Pochettino is committed to advancing the sport’s presence and impact in America, stating,

“Our football is [to] compete in the way that you need to compete, if you want to win.”
