Insights from Mauricio Pochettino on Christian Pulisic
In a recent episode of the “Unfiltered Soccer” podcast, U.S. men’s national soccer team head coach Mauricio Pochettino shared his thoughts on forward Christian Pulisic, indicating that he believes Pulisic could embody the same iconic status as Lionel Messi within American soccer.
“Christian has showcased remarkable talent both in Europe and on the international stage. He is capable of making a significant impact for us. In this country, Pulisic ought to be considered our Messi; he is a player kids across the nation look up to,”

Pulisic’s Contributions to the National Team
At just 26, Pulisic has emerged as a pivotal player for the national team, having netted 32 goals and provided 18 assists in his 76 appearances since his debut in March 2016. He has frequently assumed the captain’s armband and has played a crucial role in the team securing multiple Concacaf Nations League titles in recent years—specifically in 2019-20, 2022-23, and 2023-24.
Pulisic’s Club Career and Recent Decisions
On the club front, Pulisic’s career has seen him don the jerseys of Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, and currently, AC Milan. His last season was particularly fruitful statistically, with 17 goals and 12 assists across all competitions.
It’s important to note, however, that after a demanding club season, Pulisic opted out of participating in two friendly matches during June and the upcoming Gold Cup, a decision made in conjunction with the U.S. Soccer Federation. Pochettino justified Pulisic’s absence, mentioning that they had discussed the choice prior to its announcement.
“Christian is deeply committed to the national team and is eager to perform to the best of his ability at the 2026 World Cup. We had important discussions regarding this decision, and it was ultimately the best one for him given the different circumstances each player faces.”

Notably, Pulisic will join other experienced players like Antonee Robinson, Timothy Weah, Weston McKennie, Giovanni Reyna, and Yunus Musah in not participating in the 2025 Gold Cup. Despite these high-profile absences, Pochettino emphasized the importance of national team commitment among American players, stating:
“Playing for the national team should be a top priority. Just look at Argentine, Brazilian, English, or Spanish players; they always show a strong desire to represent their country, whether it’s in friendlies or World Cup matches. It’s about pride and responsibility, something we must instill in our players.”
Upcoming Matches for the USMNT
The USMNT is gearing up to face Turkey and Switzerland in upcoming friendlies, followed by a competitive run in Group D of the Concacaf Gold Cup against Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, and Saudi Arabia.
