Pittsburgh Penguins Acquire Elmer Soderblom
In a significant move on deadline day, the Pittsburgh Penguins have secured forward Elmer Soderblom from the Detroit Red Wings, sending a third-round draft pick to Detroit in return. This pick originally belonged to the San Jose Sharks and is set for the 2026 NHL Draft. The announcement was made by Kyle Dubas, President of Hockey Operations and General Manager for the Penguins, highlighting the team’s commitment to enhancing their roster with emerging talents.
Player Profile: Elmer Soderblom
Soderblom, standing at an impressive 6 feet 8 inches and weighing 252 pounds, is not only one of the largest players in the league today, but he brings considerable experience as well. At just 24 years old, he has played 39 games in the current season, managing to score two goals and adding one assist for a total of three points. Over the course of his career spanning three seasons with Detroit, he has recorded 22 points, which includes 11 goals and 11 assists in 86 NHL games.
AHL and International Experience
In addition to his NHL performance, Soderblom also boasts a strong AHL presence, having participated in 119 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins where he achieved 54 points, including 23 goals and 31 assists. His playoff experience is underscored by his participation in 10 Calder Cup games across two seasons, further demonstrating his readiness for competitive play.
Before making his way to the NHL, Soderblom showcased his skills in Sweden’s premier league, the SHL, where he played for Frolunda from 2019 to 2022. There, he recorded 38 points in 90 games and marked his international success by winning a gold medal at the 2019 World Under-18 Championship, alongside representing Sweden at the 2021 World Junior Championship.
Contract and Future Prospects
Soderblom’s contract extends through the 2026-27 season with an average annual value of $1.125 million, which fits alongside Pittsburgh’s strategy of targeting younger players who can thrive in expanded roles. Despite having minimal production while averaging sheltered minutes with the Red Wings, the Penguins see potential in his development, favoring his ability to grow within their system. This acquisition reflects the team’s ongoing efforts to build a stronger, more competitive lineup for the future.
