Pittsburgh Penguins Bolster Offense By Calling Up Winger Ville Koivunen

Pittsburgh Penguins Face Challenges

The Pittsburgh Penguins are facing significant challenges, as both star players Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are sidelined indefinitely due to injuries. In light of this setback and their inactivity during the recent NHL trade deadline, the team has taken proactive steps to bolster their offensive lineup.

Recall of Ville Koivunen

On Saturday, the Penguins announced the recall of winger Ville Koivunen from their AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, as they prepare for a critical weekend with back-to-back home games against the Philadelphia Flyers and the Boston Bruins. This roster decision follows the suspension of Malkin for five games, stemming from a slashing incident involving Rasmus Dahlin of the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday.

Koivunen’s Performance

Koivunen, a promising 22-year-old, has been making waves in the AHL, recently earning the Player of the Month accolade for February. He has notched six goals and accumulated 16 points over 11 games, showcasing his offensive prowess. Previously, Koivunen was involved in a trade that brought him to the Penguins organization as part of a deal for Jake Guentzel back in the spring of 2024.

Season Overview

The young winger has had a fluctuating season, debuting in the NHL for the Penguins during the first two games before returning to the AHL for most of October. His next stint in the NHL lasted until late December. Across his 27 games played at the NHL level this season, he has scored two goals and amassed seven points. Over the course of his career, which includes games from last season, he holds a total of 12 points in 35 NHL appearances.

Future Expectations

Koivunen is expected to fill in for the suspended Malkin, potentially pairing with Egor Chinakhov and Tommy Novak, or he may take a spot on the third line alongside Ben Kindel. Notably, Koivunen leads the WBS Penguins, being the only player this season averaging over a point per game with 33 points from 11 goals and 28 games played.
