Pitt to Retain Jeff Capel as Men’s Basketball Head Coach for 2026-27 Season

The University of Pittsburgh Retains Head Coach Jeff Capel

The University of Pittsburgh’s men’s basketball program will retain head coach Jeff Capel for the upcoming 2026-27 season, marking his ninth year at the helm. This decision was confirmed by Pitt’s athletic director, Allen Green, in a message directed to the Pitt community.

Challenges Faced This Season

Despite a season filled with challenges, including a disappointing 13-20 record and an early exit from the ACC tournament, Green expressed confidence in Capel’s leadership moving forward.

Earlier in the week, the Panthers faced a significant setback, losing 98-88 to NC State in the ACC tournament. Notably, during that tournament, Pitt did achieve an unexpected victory over Stanford, which had been seeded higher.

Green pointed out that the program’s performance this season fell well below expectations, particularly given the resources committed to it. In his message, he emphasized the importance of accountability and improvement, noting:

“Effort alone is not enough. We must be better going forward. I know it. Jeff knows it. And you know it.”

Capel’s Coaching Record and Future Outlook

Capel’s overall coaching record stands at an equal 127 wins and losses, with a weaker performance of 60 wins against 92 losses in ACC play. Under his leadership, Pitt has struggled to find consistent success, only managing one NCAA Tournament appearance thus far, which occurred last season when they reached the Round of 64.

Over the past few years, the only seasons of notable success for the Panthers under Capel were 2022-23, 2023-24, and 2024-25, with the 2022-23 campaign yielding 24 victories—the most since he took charge.

Green’s decision indicates a belief in maintaining stability as the program seeks to improve. The athletic director has committed to ongoing evaluations of the basketball program and its structure to ensure the team aligns with the expectations set forth by the university.

Notably, Capel’s recent contract extension, which was granted in 2024, runs through the 2029-30 season, ensuring he will remain at Pittsburgh for the foreseeable future. With the expectations for the program acknowledged, both Green and Capel understand that significant improvements must be made in the seasons to come.
