Detroit Pistons Secure Top Spot in Eastern Conference
In an unexpected turn, the Detroit Pistons have secured the top position in the Eastern Conference just one week before the regular season concludes, a feat that seemed improbable following the serious lung injury sustained by their star player, Cade Cunningham, which is set to sideline him for the remainder of the season. However, a decisive 116-93 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday has significantly bolstered their morale, granting the Pistons home-court advantage for the Eastern playoffs for the first time since the 2006-07 season.
Cunningham’s Recovery and Team Resilience
As Cunningham continues his recovery from a collapsed lung—he is anticipated to be reevaluated within a week—signs indicate he will likely be available for the Pistons’ playoff opener in two weeks. Despite his absence, the team has managed to thrive, posting a 7-2 record in the nine games since Cunningham was injured, with both losses occurring in overtime against formidable opponents, including the reigning champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Cunningham was a pivotal figure for the Pistons, contributing an impressive average of 24.5 points and 9.9 assists per game prior to his injury, characterized by a usage rate that placed him among the league’s elite. In his absence, the team has adopted a collective approach to fill the gap. All-Star center Jalen Duren has stepped up significantly, averaging 23 points and 11 rebounds with a remarkable shooting percentage of 66% since Cunningham’s departure. Additionally, Daniss Jenkins, a backup point guard, has found renewed form, contributing 19.3 points and over seven assists per game during this stretch, including a notable 14 assists on Saturday, just shy of his personal best.
“With Cade here, we were more relaxed knowing we had a superstar to rely on for wins,” shared Pistons swingman Ausar Thompson. “But since his injury, we’ve rallied together, understanding the necessity to compensate for his absence, particularly on defense.”
Defensive Commitment and Team Dynamics
Thompson, who currently leads the NBA in steals per game and has received the Eastern Conference Defensive Player of the Month accolade twice this season, noted the Pistons’ renewed focus on defense. This defensive commitment was evident in their performance against the 76ers, who needed a win to maintain their sixth seed and avoid the play-in tournament. Philadelphia saw a decline in their scoring throughout the game, ultimately finishing the fourth quarter with only 12 points, enabling the Pistons to stretch their lead.
“We’re effectively slowing teams down, making them execute their plays later in the shot clock,” Thompson explained. “My aim is to keep every team under 100 points; we accomplished that tonight.”
Adding to their challenges, the Pistons have also been without the critical defensive presence of Isaiah Stewart, out since March 13 with a calf strain. Nevertheless, since Cunningham’s injury, the team has ranked as the third best in defensive performance across the NBA, while shooting percentages have notably improved, with a 38.8% success rate from beyond the arc, a significant upgrade considering their struggles in this area earlier in the season.
Forward Tobias Harris, who previously spent over five seasons with the 76ers before returning to the Pistons two years ago, emphasized the team’s proactive mindset. “Cade’s injury didn’t deter us; we chose to prove ourselves and showcase our style of play. We’ve emphasized this message daily, and I believe we’re evolving positively.”
Looking Ahead to the Playoffs
During the game against the 76ers, which saw Harris receive boos from the crowd, he led the Pistons with 19 points in 27 minutes of action. He interpreted the hostile atmosphere as beneficial preparation for the playoffs.
“It’s an excellent opportunity to engage in high-stakes basketball; it trains you for the intensity of the playoffs. I view these challenges positively—to me, it’s a form of preparation.”
The Pistons believe that this period of adversity without Cunningham has diversified their gameplay, yet they eagerly anticipate his return for the opening playoff game.
“I’m super excited to have him back, I miss our chemistry on the court,” Thompson expressed. “His presence will undoubtedly lift our energy and continue to steer us in the right direction as we head into the playoffs.”
