Philadelphia Union Places Sporting Director on Administrative Leave
The Philadelphia Union announced on Wednesday that Ernst Tanner, their sporting director, will be placed on administrative leave as Major League Soccer (MLS) reactivates its investigation concerning allegations of inappropriate conduct in the workplace.
Allegations Against Tanner
Recent findings from The Guardian disclosed serious accusations against Tanner, including allegations of making racist remarks about Black players, coaches, and referees, alongside using sexist and anti-gay language within the organization. These claims surfaced through a complaint filed by the MLS Players Association (MLSPA).
“The Philadelphia Union emphasized their dedication to addressing misconduct allegations seriously, stating the importance of fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all individuals connected with the club.”
The Union reaffirmed that any form of discrimination, harassment, or abusive behavior is unacceptable and reiterated their obligation to ensure that staff undergo annual sensitivity training.
Previous Investigations and Current Developments
An earlier MLS investigation had initially examined the allegations against Tanner but concluded without finding sufficient evidence to support the claims. However, concerns raised in The Guardian‘s report triggered the league to reopen its inquiry, and the Union has pledged its full cooperation throughout this process. The organization reiterated that the health and safety of players, fans, staff, and the larger community remain their primary focus.
The league’s past investigation contacted over a dozen current and former players and club personnel, allowing for anonymous participation to ensure individuals could voice their concerns without fear of repercussions. Despite a majority of those approached providing information, the investigation ultimately did not confirm the allegations. Nonetheless, Tanner was mandated to engage in a structured remedial program to address workplace conduct issues.
Looking Ahead
The reopening of the investigation follows the emergence of new allegations and additional information published in The Guardian article. MLS promotes an anonymous reporting hotline and encourages those with pertinent information to step forward.
Ernst Tanner has been with the Union since 2018, signing a contract extension in 2021. The current situation marks a significant moment in the organization’s management and their commitment to maintaining an accountable workplace.
