Philadelphia Flyers Finalize Roster Cuts Ahead of 2023 Preseason
In a notable move, the Philadelphia Flyers have finalized another round of roster cuts ahead of the 2023 preseason, releasing two players selected in the 2025 NHL Draft. The team announced on Wednesday that center Matthew Gard and defenseman Luke Vlooswyk will return to their junior team, the WHL Red Deer Rebels.
This decision comes after Gard, 18, participated in the team’s recent preseason match against the Montreal Canadiens, where he managed to win only one of five faceoffs and took one shot on goal during his 11 minutes and 11 seconds on the ice. In contrast, Vlooswyk, also 18, did not see any action in the Flyers’ two preseason games thus far.
Additional Roster Changes
Additionally, the Flyers parted ways with defenseman Andre Mondoux, who had joined the training camp as a tryout alongside goalie Joey Costanzo. Mondoux played just eight games for the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs last season, contributing one assist, and spent significantly more time with the OJHL’s Pickering Panthers. His path to an entry-level contract will require another full season in the OHL to hone his skills and potentially attract interest from NHL teams, including the Flyers, as he becomes available for the 2026 NHL Draft.
Upcoming Matchup
Looking ahead, the Flyers will next hit the ice on Thursday, September 25, for a matchup against the Washington Capitals at the Giant Center, home of the AHL Hershey Bears, kicking off at 7 p.m. Fans can tune in to NBC Sports Philadelphia to catch the action.
