Los Angeles Kings Pursue Peter Laviolette as Head Coach
The Los Angeles Kings’ search for their next head coach has intensified with the emergence of experienced NHL veteran Peter Laviolette as a serious candidate. According to hockey insider Pierre LeBrun, the franchise has initiated discussions with the 61-year-old coach, who brings an extensive resume that includes a Stanley Cup championship.
Laviolette’s Impressive Coaching Record
Laviolette’s credentials are substantial. Over his career, he has logged more than 1,700 combined games across regular seasons and playoff campaigns, compiling an impressive regular season record of 846 wins against 1,594 games for a .589 winning percentage. Notably, he guided the Carolina Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup victory in 2006 and led two other franchises—the Philadelphia Flyers in 2010 and Nashville Predators in 2017—to the championship series, though both efforts fell short against dominant opponents.
Other Candidates and Organizational Considerations
The Kings’ coaching search extends beyond Laviolette, however. The organization continues to express strong interest in other available candidates, particularly Bruce Cassidy, while also considering Manny Malhotra, a former player with nearly 1,000 NHL games in his playing career. Current interim coach DJ Smith has also been part of discussions, according to reports.
The timing of this selection process carries significance for Los Angeles, as the franchise navigates a major transition period following the end of an era defined by Anze Kopitar’s tenure. Team management faces the dual challenge of identifying the right leadership fit while maintaining momentum during an offseason that includes the upcoming NHL Draft and free agency period. The decision ultimately requires careful evaluation from both Laviolette’s camp and the Kings’ front office to determine whether a mutual fit exists for the organization’s future direction.
