Pep Guardiola Reflects on Tactical Errors After City’s Shocking Loss to Leverkusen

Manchester City’s Recent Setback

Manchester City’s recent setback against Bayer Leverkusen, where they suffered a 2-0 loss at home, has prompted manager Pep Guardiola to reflect on his decision-making. This defeat marked the team’s first loss in the Champions League group stage or league competition since 2018, attributed to goals from Leverkusen’s Alejandro Grimaldo and Patrik Schick.

Guardiola’s Reflection

After the game, Guardiola expressed regret over making ten alterations to his lineup, acknowledging that such a significant number of changes may have been excessive.

“Perhaps I was too accommodating with my squad players,”

he stated.

“When you’re a football player who hasn’t seen match action for several weeks, it can be challenging, but maybe I placed too much trust in that aspect. I take full responsibility for the outcome.”

He added,

“I tend to favor inclusivity, wanting everyone to contribute. However, this time it backfired, and we must learn from it. This was a unique situation for me, and clearly, it was too far-reaching.”

Looking Ahead

The defeat has now heightened the stakes for City as they prepare for their upcoming match against Real Madrid next month. Alongside this challenge, they also have fixtures against Bodo/Glimt and Galatasaray scheduled in January. Given last season’s disappointing finish—where they ended up 22nd and faced Madrid in the playoff round—the current focus is on securing a stronger position to aim for the top eight in the standings.

“We still have three matches remaining, and we’ll see how it unfolds,”

Guardiola remarked.

“Currently, it’s about regrouping mentally and focusing on our next clash with Leeds.”
