Pittsburgh Penguins Training Camp Scrimmage
On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Penguins kicked off their training camp with an exhilarating scrimmage that drew attention to several players, particularly Kris Letang. This intrasquad match, which lasted around an hour, unfolded at two different rinks: Covestro and FedEx.
Team Lineups and Match Highlights
Team Black featured a top line of stars including Sidney Crosby, Bryan Rust, and the promising Avery Hayes, while Team White countered with Evgeni Malkin, Anthony Mantha, and Danton Heinen. Team White emerged victorious with a score of 5-3, significantly bolstered by Letang’s remarkable performance which included a hat trick.
The offensive action began when Sam Poulin found the back of the net for Team Black with a clever shot that slipped through Sergei Murashov, who was in goal for Team White at the time. However, Letang quickly turned the tide, netting two goals and bringing Team White ahead at 2-1. His second goal was particularly eye-catching; he unleashed a powerful one-timer that zipped past goaltender Tristan Jarry so quickly that it barely registered. The standout defenseman later completed his hat trick with a penalty shot after being tripped, showcasing his scoring prowess.
Player Performances
Letang was mainly paired with Ryan Graves during the scrimmage, demonstrating sharp movements and fluid skating. Not to be overlooked, Malkin’s line, with Heinen and Mantha, dominated the offensive zone. Malkin orchestrated plays with finesse, including a dazzling behind-the-back assist to Heinen, who then scored, giving Team White a temporary 3-2 lead.
Mantha further solidified Team White’s edge by scoring the final goal of the match, driving a shot past goalie Maxim Pavlenko to round out the score at 5-3 as the second period came to a close. Pavlenko took over goalkeeping duties in the second half to replace Jarry, who played the opening period.
Looking Ahead
Looking specifically at Poulin, his initial scoring not only provided a morale boost but was crucial after his underwhelming performance in the preseason game against the Canadiens. Alongside teammates Gabe Klassen and Boko Imama, Poulin showed a return to form, although he must continue this trajectory to secure a spot on the final roster.
Murashov, who was impressive during the last preseason game, continued to shine by stopping a certain goal from Crosby with a glove save that earned applause from those in attendance. Playing the entire scrimmage due to teammate Joel Blomqvist‘s day-to-day injury, Murashov’s sharp positioning proved integral for Team White, strengthening his case as the leading goaltender at camp, albeit the Penguins are cautious about rushing any of their prospects.
Next on the Penguins’ agenda is their second preseason outing against the Columbus Blue Jackets, scheduled for Wednesday night at 7 p.m. ET, which fans will be able to watch live on the Penguins’ official website.
