NHL Playoffs and Former Penguins
As the NHL playoffs progress, it’s becoming clear that at least one former Pittsburgh Penguin will soon be celebrating lifting the Stanley Cup this summer, though it remains uncertain which team will claim the prestigious trophy.
Carolina Hurricanes
The Carolina Hurricanes have emerged as a formidable force, currently boasting an impressive postseason record of 8-0. Led by captain Jordan Staal, a former Stanley Cup champion with the Penguins in 2009, the Hurricanes are on a quest to return to the Stanley Cup Final. They are also fortified by Mark Jankowski, adding depth to their lineup.
Vegas Golden Knights
Meanwhile, the Vegas Golden Knights have Reilly Smith, who experienced displeasure after being traded to the Penguins to manage salary cap issues. Now back in Vegas, he is eager to chase another championship. Though he may not be the prolific scorer he once was, registering 26 points in 69 regular-season games and contributing two points in the current playoffs, his presence is invaluable. Adding to their connections to Pittsburgh, the Knights also include Brandon Saad, although his role appears more limited, featuring in just three playoff contests.
Colorado Avalanche
In Colorado, Brett Kulak, the latest ex-Penguins player, has made a significant impact for the Avalanche. With five points in nine playoff appearances—including a pivotal overtime goal against the Minnesota Wild—he’s helping his team advance. Though Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby won’t be playing this postseason, he is likely cheering on his friend Nathan MacKinnon as they pursue a second Stanley Cup together.
Buffalo-Montreal Series
Looking towards the Buffalo-Montreal series, which had not concluded at the time of this writing, both teams have former Penguins. Montreal features Mike Matheson, while Buffalo is represented by Jason Zucker and Conor Timmins, alongside Mattias Samuelsson, the son of former Penguin Ulf Samuelsson. Whichever team proceeds to the next round will still signify another connection to Pittsburgh in the ongoing playoffs.
