Patrick Reed Takes Lead in Dubai as Rory McIlroy Seeks Strong Weekend to Contend

Dubai Desert Classic Highlights

In Dubai, Patrick Reed surged ahead at the European Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic on Friday, marking a pivotal moment for LIV Golf participants as Dustin Johnson faced an early exit. Reed, a former Masters champion, achieved a remarkable 6-under 66, placing him at the top of the leaderboard with a total score of 9-under 135 after two rounds at Emirates Golf Club.

Reed’s Performance

This venue has been a familiar battleground for Reed, who has previously finished in second and tenth in past outings. His round featured four birdies and a stunning eagle from 40 feet at the par-5 13th hole.

Challengers and Setbacks

Andy Sullivan joined the mix with a spectacular performance, carding a 65—the best round of the day—following a birdie-eagle finish, which positioned him just one stroke behind Reed. Meanwhile, the day’s events were less favorable for Johnson, who failed to make the cut after struggling with a second consecutive round of 74. Once a dominant figure in the sport, Johnson has seen his status diminish, currently sitting at No. 639 in the world rankings after his move to the LIV circuit in 2022.

McIlroy’s Optimism

Rory McIlroy, a four-time champion of the tournament, is also in contention but will need a significant effort this weekend. He managed a score of 69 on Friday, improving from his earlier 72, but remains seven strokes behind Reed. Despite the challenges, McIlroy expressed optimism, stating,

“It was an improvement on yesterday and at least gave myself half a chance going into the weekend.”

His pivotal birdie on the par-5 18th helped mitigate the damage from his previous round.

Other Notable Performances

Tommy Fleetwood, ranked No. 3, barely made the cut with a 72, leaving him ten shots off the pace. Defending champion Tyrrell Hatton, another LIV golfer, showed resilience, recording a 69 to secure a spot at sixth place, four strokes behind. He celebrated his round with an eagle at the short par-4 17th, highlighting a day filled with mixed results for the LIV contingent.
