Patrick Reed Exits LIV Golf for European Tour
In a surprising move, Patrick Reed, the 2018 Masters champion, has announced he will exit the LIV Golf series funded by Saudi Arabia and transition to the European Tour for the rest of the year. Reed’s announcement comes just days after a triumphant victory at the Dubai Desert Classic, and coincides with Brooks Koepka’s return to the PGA Tour at Torrey Pines after a break.
Broader Trends in Golf
Reed’s decision reflects a broader trend among golfers, as he becomes the second prominent player to leave LIV Golf behind. The PGA Tour has indicated a clear pathway for players attempting to reintegrate into its ranks, particularly for those, like Reed, who haven’t qualified for the unique “Returning Member Program” aimed at major winners since 2022.
According to PGA Tour guidelines, Reed, having resigned his membership upon joining LIV, is eligible to return a year after his last appearance, which was on August 24, 2025. Notably, this exit will not subject Reed to further disciplinary action from the Tour.
Upcoming Competitions
This current season of LIV Golf is set to kick off next week in Saudi Arabia while Reed will be competing in Bahrain as part of the ongoing European Tour. If he achieves a top-10 finish among players eligible for the Race to Dubai, Reed could secure a full tour card for the PGA.
His performance at the Dubai Desert Classic helped him climb to the 29th spot in the world rankings, enabling him to secure qualification for all four major tournaments of the year.
