Panthers Edge Rangers 3-2 in Quick’s Farewell Game as Reinhardt Shines

Florida Panthers Triumph Over New York Rangers

In a thrilling matchup on Monday night, the Florida Panthers secured a narrow 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers, marking a bittersweet conclusion to the career of goaltender Jonathan Quick. With only 1:50 remaining in the game, Cole Reinhardt netted his second goal, ultimately sealing the win and denying Quick a fairytale finish in his final NHL appearance.

Quick, a legendary figure in hockey known for his three Stanley Cup victories, had announced his retirement prior to the game, capping off 19 remarkable seasons, including two championships with the Los Angeles Kings and a recent win with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023.

Game Highlights

The game started favorably for the Panthers, who jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Reinhardt and Mackie Samoskevich. Reinhardt opened the scoring by capitalizing on a rebound from defenseman Tobias Bjornfot‘s shot, while Samoskevich extended the lead with a breakaway goal at 11:21 of the first period.

The Rangers, who were seeking to snap a three-game losing streak, responded with a goal from Matthew Robertson, who found the net with a shot from the point at 15:19 of the opening frame. Gabe Perreault then equalized at 2-2 late in the second period, scoring off a rebound from Adam Fox‘s shot with just 2:40 left before the second intermission.

Despite the Rangers’ effort in the third period, Florida’s goalie Daniil Tarasov stood firm, making a total of 24 saves, including all 14 he faced in the final period as New York pushed hard for a victory to honor Quick. The Rangers, however, could not find the net again, extending their losing streak as Reinhardt’s late goal lifted the Panthers to victory.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, the Rangers will look to regain their form when they face the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday, while the Panthers prepare to host the Detroit Red Wings on the same night.
