Support for Young Talent
Abel Ferreira, the head coach of Palmeiras, offered his support for young winger Estêvão after the 18-year-old expressed feelings of anxiety regarding his impending transfer to Chelsea. In recent remarks to the media, Estêvão detailed the nerves and excitement he is experiencing leading up to his move to Stamford Bridge, which has been in the works since June. He described the situation as a dream coming to fruition but admitted it is challenging to concentrate as the date approaches.
“It’s a dream that I’m about to make real,” Estêvão said. “I need to stay focused and work hard, but as the moment draws near, the anxiety builds. I want to ensure I leave Palmeiras in a good position.”
His honest admission, however, has drawn some criticism from fans and local media, who believe he should maintain his focus on the Club World Cup, where Palmeiras is set to face Brazilian rivals Botafogo this Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
Defending Emotions
In response to the backlash, Ferreira defended Estêvão during a press conference, emphasizing the humanity of feelings and emotions.
“It’s completely natural to feel nervous in high-stakes matches, especially for someone so young whose childhood dreams are about to be realized,” Ferreira explained. “He’s just an 18-year-old kid, and while it was maybe a bit naive of him to share his feelings, I think a lot of the criticism has been quite harsh.”
Rising Star
Estêvão has made a significant impact in the ongoing tournament, starting all three of Palmeiras’ matches in the Club World Cup group stage against teams like Porto, Al Ahly, and Inter Miami, assisting in three goals. Widely regarded as one of the most promising young players in South America, Estêvão also made his senior team debut for Brazil last September, showcasing his potential on an international level.
