Pacers President Reacts to Bucks’ Bid for Myles Turner
In a recent statement, Indiana Pacers president of basketball operations, Kevin Pritchard, expressed astonishment at the Milwaukee Bucks’ unexpected bid for Myles Turner, a player who has been an integral part of the Pacers for the past decade.
Turner’s New Contract
Turner, who entered the offseason as an unrestricted free agent, ultimately signed a four-year contract with the Bucks worth $107 million, which includes a player option for the fourth year and a 15% trade kicker. The Bucks managed to create the financial flexibility necessary for the deal by parting ways with All-Star Damian Lillard, a move that took the Pacers by surprise.
“We were fully prepared to venture into the luxury tax to keep Myles with us,” Pritchard remarked, emphasizing the team’s commitment to retaining the center after his significant contributions, including a role in leading the Pacers to their first NBA Finals appearance in 25 years.
Complications in Negotiations
However, he acknowledged the complications that arose during the discussions, stating,
“In our conference room, we talk about teams that have cap space and teams that operate from the shadows. It’s a complex situation when a player is unrestricted, which allows them the freedom to accept offers that benefit their families.”
Amid the negotiations, Indiana’s strategy shifted slightly due to Trey’s severe Achilles injury, which will sideline star guard Tyrese Haliburton for the entirety of the 2025-26 season, potentially dampening Indiana’s motivation to invest heavily in Turner’s contract extension. Nevertheless, Pritchard confirmed that Pacers’ owner Herb Simon and his family were ready to invest deeply into the luxury tax to keep Turner in Indiana.
Pacers’ Next Steps
Following Turner’s departure, the Pacers quickly moved on, acquiring backup center Jay Huff from the Memphis Grizzlies, aiming to secure another versatile big man who can help with rim protection and offensive spacing.
