Ottawa Senators Add Arthur Kaliyev to Roster Following Tkachuk’s Injury Update

Ottawa Senators Recall Arthur Kaliyev

In a strategic move aimed at enhancing their offensive capabilities, the Ottawa Senators have recalled forward Arthur Kaliyev from their AHL affiliate, the Belleville Senators. This decision comes in light of the team placing captain Brady Tkachuk on injured reserve due to a hand or wrist injury sustained during their matchup against Nashville earlier this week. The Senators are set to face the Seattle Kraken at the Canadian Tire Centre on Thursday night.

Kaliyev’s Background and Performance

Kaliyev, who signed a one-year, two-way contract with Ottawa on July 2, reunites with a coaching staff familiar with his career, having previously spent three seasons with the Hamilton Bulldogs in the OHL. This connection allowed Senators General Manager Steve Staios, who previously managed the Bulldogs, to give a solid endorsement regarding Kaliyev’s talents and character. However, despite his promising junior stats, including 95 goals across two seasons in the OHL, Kaliyev has struggled to find that scoring touch in the NHL, recording 75 points (38 goals, 37 assists) in 202 games split between the Los Angeles Kings and the New York Rangers.

Although not initially selected for the Senators’ roster out of training camp, Kaliyev made an impact in his first two contests with Belleville, where he registered a pair of assists. The Senators are optimistic that his renowned shooting skills—particularly his lethal release—can infuse some much-needed energy into their struggling power play.

Challenges and Future Prospects

Kaliyev’s professional journey has faced significant obstacles, notably two clavicle fractures last season. His first injury arose during training camp with the Kings, and after a brief return, he was claimed off waivers by the Rangers, where he managed three goals and one assist before suffering a second injury that curtailed his season. Reflecting on this crucial moment in his career, Kaliyev remarked on the opportunity presented by Ottawa, stating,

“Ottawa knows me well … To come here, this was my best option.”

As of now, it remains uncertain if he will make his season debut against Seattle.

Tkachuk’s Injury Update

On the other hand, Tkachuk’s placement on injured reserve was anticipated, considering the team’s disclosure of his absence lasting at least four weeks. The extent of the injury is still under evaluation, and the possibility of surgery looms, which could extend the recovery period to around 2-5 months depending on the seriousness of his condition. Fans and the organization alike are eagerly awaiting further updates within the next few days.
