Change in Leadership at Orlando Magic

In a significant shift within the Orlando Magic’s management, Alex Martins will transition from his role as CEO to vice chair starting July 1, following an announcement made by the organization on Wednesday. This change aligns with a broader reorganization within the team’s executive structure, which aims to utilize Martins’ extensive experience effectively.

Alex Martins’ Legacy

Having been a part of the Magic since 1989, Martins has become a key figure in both the organization and the Orlando community, embodying a dedication to excellence. Dan DeVos, chairman of the Magic, praised Martins’ leadership, stating:

“Alex’s commitment to excellence has distinguished him as an extraordinary leader in our organization and the Orlando community.”

DeVos also mentioned that the decision to create a new role for Martins was made following his expressed intention to retire a few years back.

New Management Structure

Martins has served as CEO for 14 years and remarked on the experience, saying:

“Leading the Magic as CEO has been one of the greatest blessings of my life.”

Following Martins’ departure from the CEO role, the Magic will not appoint a new CEO. Instead, Charlie Freeman, who currently holds the position of president of business operations, will take charge of various key areas, including ticket sales, global partnerships, arena operations, philanthropy, finance, human resources, communications, and broadcasting.

Additional Leadership Changes

Further changes in leadership include Ryan DeVos, who has been with the team for eight years, stepping into the position of managing director. Additionally, Cole DeVos plans to move to Orlando for the 2025-26 season to participate in a comprehensive management development program. Meanwhile, Jeff Weltman continues to serve as president of basketball operations, managing all basketball-related initiatives directly reporting to the board of directors.
