Olivier Giroud Reflects on His Time with LAFC
Olivier Giroud, the veteran French striker, reflected on his not-so-successful tenure with LAFC, highlighting that the Major League Soccer (MLS) style did not quite align with his playing style. At the age of 38, Giroud’s agreement with LAFC was set to conclude by the end of this year; however, both parties decided to part ways amicably, allowing him to move without any transfer fees back to Lille, where he aims to revive his career after finishing fifth in last season’s Ligue 1.
Career Highlights and Achievements
Not only is Giroud the leading goal scorer for the French national team with a total of 57 goals, but he also bagged a World Cup title in 2018. Despite earning admiration from fans during his time at LAFC, his performance was subdued, netting only five goals across 38 appearances.
Return to France
During his introduction to the media in Lille, he described his return to France after 13 years as an exciting opportunity filled with challenges ahead.
“The MLS style didn’t necessarily suit me,” Giroud expressed. “Coming back to France is both an opportunity and an incredible challenge for me.”
Giroud’s Journey in the French League
Giroud’s journey in the French league began in 2012 when he played a significant role in leading Montpellier to an unexpected Ligue 1 victory, scoring 21 goals that campaign. He moved on to Arsenal in the English Premier League, where he garnered three FA Cup championships. Subsequently, he enjoyed successful stints at Chelsea and AC Milan, where his scoring prowess, ability to hold the ball, and team-oriented play became trademarks of his career. Notably, at Chelsea, he celebrated victories in both the Europa League (2019) and the Champions League (2021), along with another FA Cup title. His contributions were pivotal in AC Milan’s Serie A championship win in 2022.
Looking Ahead
Giroud expressed confidence in his physical condition, asserting,
“I feel in good shape physically, don’t worry. I’m ready to take up the challenge. I feel good for my age and I want to play until my body says stop.”
Last season, Lille had a few standout moments in the Champions League, notably defeating Real Madrid, but they will compete in the Europa League for the upcoming season.
“I crave challenges; it’s what has propelled my career,”
he noted, expressing enthusiasm for the hurdles that lie ahead. Lille is scheduled to kick off their Ligue 1 season against Brest in mid-August.
