Oliver Marmol to Remain Cardinals Manager Through 2028 Season After Contract Extension

St. Louis Cardinals Extend Manager Oliver Marmol

JUPITER, Florida (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have announced a two-year extension for manager Oliver Marmol, ensuring his leadership through at least the end of the 2028 season. The new agreement also includes an option for the club to retain him for an additional year in 2029.

Management’s Confidence in Marmol

In a statement, Cardinals president Chaim Bloom praised Marmol, highlighting his deep commitment to the team and his understanding of what has historically made the Cardinals successful. Bloom emphasized the importance of relentless competition and setting high standards as integral to the team’s future. In his view, Marmol is dedicated to developing the team’s younger players while also welcoming personal challenges to foster growth in those around him.

Marmol’s Tenure and Challenges

At 39 years old, Marmol has been at the helm of the Cardinals for four seasons. In his debut year, he successfully led the team to the National League wild-card round. However, the team has struggled in subsequent years, missing the playoffs and finishing with a disappointing 78-84 record last season.

The Cardinals’ management has seen the last few seasons as a phase to recalibrate, especially following Bloom’s ascent to leadership, replacing longtime executive John Mozeliak. Implementing stability through Marmol, who now ranks as the third-longest-serving manager in the National League—behind the Dodgers’ Dave Roberts and the Diamondbacks’ Torey Lovullo—aligns well with their strategy.

Marmol’s Background

Marmol, who played for the Cardinals starting in 2007, transitioned into coaching after spending five seasons in the minor leagues. He joined the major league coaching staff in 2017 and was appointed as the team’s manager on October 25, 2021. His career record with the Cardinals stands at 324 wins and 323 losses, reflecting a challenging yet formative leadership journey thus far.
