Usyk’s Measured Recovery
Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk is taking a measured approach as he recuperates from an injury, with his team emphasizing that he deserves the time to select his next opponent thoughtfully. Usyk, who boasts an undefeated record of 24 wins with 15 by knockout, recently claimed victory over Daniel Dubois, defeating him in the fifth round during their match at Wembley Stadium last month. This win solidified Usyk’s status as a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion.
WBO Mandate and Negotiations
Following his victory, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) mandated that he face their interim champion, Joseph Parker, and set a 30-day window starting July 22 for negotiations to take place before purse bids are considered. In light of this directive, Usyk’s team has requested an extension from the WBO, seeking an additional 90 days; however, the organization agreed to a compromise of an extra 30 days.
Team’s Perspective
Serhii Lapin, a close friend of Usyk who also serves as the director of his team, stated they will deliberate the next steps without haste.
“Usyk and our team have always shown respect for all potential adversaries and adhere to boxing’s regulations,”
Lapin expressed in a statement to Ready to Fight. He noted that Usyk’s journey over the past 18 months has been monumental, highlighting the immense mental and physical strain involved in achieving the status of undisputed heavyweight champion twice.
“He deserves the chance to recuperate from his rigorous training and the unseen injuries, and it’s crucial that he spends time with his family as well. Most importantly, he has the right to decide his future on his own terms—there’s no need to rush this decision,”
Lapin added.
Recent Triumphs
Notably, earlier this year, Usyk triumphed over Tyson Fury on two occasions before facing Dubois in the rematch.
