Oklahoma City Thunder Launch New City Edition Uniforms Celebrating Native American Heritage

Oklahoma City Thunder Unveils New City Edition Uniforms

The Oklahoma City Thunder have officially rolled out their new City Edition uniforms, showcasing a strong homage to the rich tapestry of Native and Indigenous cultures that define the state. These uniforms are set to make their first appearance during the franchise’s annual Native American Heritage Night on November 19, when the Thunder take on the Sacramento Kings.

Design Inspiration

This year’s design draws inspiration from the franchise’s previous turquoise design from the 2018-19 season, which also highlighted the heritage of Native American communities within Oklahoma, a state that is home to 67 tribes. This time, however, the jerseys feature a darker blue shade while incorporating interlocking geometric shapes that spell out “OKC” at the center.

Symbolic Elements

Incorporating elements symbolic of the local landscape, the uniforms include diagonal, water-inspired teeth motifs that represent the nearby Oklahoma River, seamlessly blending the two color schemes. The waistband further enhances the design with a pattern of expanding squares, while a subtle turtle emblem is discretely placed on the right side of the shorts, symbolizing strength and endurance.

Additionally, the jerseys and shorts are adorned with 11 geometric stars that reflect the importance of storytelling in Indigenous cultures, representing narratives that have been passed down through generations. A sash colored like a Thunder sunset also features prominently, illustrating the resilience and spirit of Oklahoma’s tribes.

Alternate Court Design

Coinciding with the launch of the new uniforms is an alternate court design tailored for night games celebrating Oklahoma City’s identity. Starting December 5, every Friday home game will embrace the cultural city night theme, with the Thunder donning their distinctive new style alongside the specially designed court.
