Oilers Secure Trent Frederic with an Eight-Year Contract Extension Worth $3.85 Million AAV

Edmonton Oilers Secure Trent Frederic with Long-Term Contract

The Edmonton Oilers have made a significant move by locking in forward Trent Frederic with an eight-year contract extension, as confirmed by the team on Friday. This long-term deal carries a salary cap hit of $3.85 million and secures Frederic’s services through the conclusion of the 2033-34 NHL season.

General Manager’s Praise

In a statement reflecting on Frederic’s contributions, General Manager Stan Bowman praised his competitive spirit, teamwork, and overall value to the team.

“He embodies the qualities that are essential for a winning team,”

Bowman stated, highlighting Frederic’s determination and resilience, which add a competitive edge to the Oilers’ lineup.

Versatility and Future Potential

Frederic’s versatility is expected to be crucial for the team, as he is capable of playing both center and wing positions. His potential alignment with star player Leon Draisaitl has sparked interest, as Frederic himself expressed eagerness to play more centrally during the conclusion of the previous season.

“I would love the chance to take on that role, but it’s about earning the opportunity,”

he remarked, emphasizing his adaptability across multiple forward positions.

Performance Overview

The 27-year-old forward enjoyed his best professional season in 2023-24, posting 18 goals and a total of 40 points. His previous season saw him tallying 17 goals and 31 points, demonstrating consistent growth. Before joining the Oilers, Frederic had struggled with the Boston Bruins, where he recorded only eight goals and 15 points over 57 games.

Trade and Challenges

On March 4, Frederic was traded to Edmonton from Boston in a complex three-team deal involving the New Jersey Devils. The Oilers gave up a 2025 second-round pick along with prospects to facilitate the transaction, which included favorable retention on Frederic’s contract.

After joining the Oilers, he faced challenges due to a pre-existing ankle injury that limited his regular-season appearances to just one game on April 5, 2024. In that match, he only played for 7:10 before experiencing further complications, ultimately missing the final stretch of the season. His playoffs were hindered as well, resulting in a modest contribution of one goal and four points across 22 games.

Looking Ahead

Despite his limited playoff performance, Frederic aims to rebound in the upcoming season. He noted his lack of satisfaction with his performance during the postseason but is ready to move forward. Additionally, following the trade of Evander Kane to the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton appears to be restructuring, with potential movements for other players like Viktor Arvidsson, who holds a no-movement clause, to create additional salary cap space.
