NWSL Trade Breaks Records as Jaedyn Shaw Joins Gotham FC from North Carolina

Record-Breaking Trade in NWSL

In an unprecedented move within the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), the North Carolina Courage have reportedly traded midfielder Jaedyn Shaw to NJ/NY Gotham FC for a staggering $1.25 million, a record-breaking amount for intra-league transactions. This fee significantly surpasses the previous record of $600,000 set just months prior, when the Kansas City Current acquired USWNT forward Ally Sentnor from the Utah Royals.

Details of the Trade

Various reports have confirmed this deal with sources indicating that the payment will be made in several installments and will be completed using NWSL intra-league transfer funds. Gotham FC’s management is keen on enhancing their roster’s creative capabilities and intends to secure Shaw’s services until the end of the 2029 NWSL season.

Timing and Context

The window for international transfers in the NWSL closed on August 25; however, trades within the league remain possible until October 9 when the roster freeze takes effect. This trade marks a swift exit for Shaw from the Courage, having joined the team less than a year ago. In January, she transitioned from San Diego Wave FC to North Carolina, a move driven by her desire for change.

Shaw’s Achievements and Impact

The Courage had to part with substantial allocation resources to acquire her, including $300,000 and an international roster slot for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. While at San Diego, Shaw achieved significant accolades, including winning the NWSL Shield and Challenge Cup and being named to the NWSL Best XI in 2023.

Current League Standings

Now, she will bolster Gotham FC, who sit sixth in league standings with the postseason fast approaching. Meanwhile, the Courage are struggling in 11th position, just four points shy of the final playoff spot. Following a challenging period, including the dismissal of head coach Sean Nahas in early August, Shaw’s departure comes amidst her own struggles to fulfill the high expectations after joining North Carolina.

Shaw’s Performance

This season, she has made 10 starts, scoring three goals and providing one assist, while also boasting a strong record with the USWNT, including eight goals in 26 appearances and earning the Golden Ball at the Women’s Gold Cup in 2024.
