Tennis Superstar Novak Djokovic’s Investments in Greece
Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic is reportedly making significant investments in Greece, signaling a deeper connection to the country after he relocated there following the 2025 US Open. This move to Athens came in the wake of rising tensions with the Serbian government, particularly after Djokovic openly criticized the authorities for their handling of protestors. As a result of his relocation, the Belgrade Open was shifted to Athens, where Djokovic and his family hold the tournament’s license, facilitating a natural transfer of the event to his new base.
Recent Achievements and Future Plans
In a thrilling performance at the 2025 Athens Open, Djokovic secured his 101st career title, defeating Lorenzo Musetti in a closely contested final. However, a minor injury sidelined him from participating in the 2025 ATP Finals in Turin. During an interview prior to that tournament, he remarked on how comfortably he has settled in Greece, citing the cultural and historical connections between Greece and Serbia as a major factor influencing his decision to move.
Recent reports reveal that Djokovic is investing around 20 million euros into a state-of-the-art tennis and racket club situated on the Athenian coast. This facility is expected to serve as his primary training venue, enabling him to maintain a rigorous training regimen while remaining close to family. Although Djokovic, now 38, has expressed uncertainty about his long-term plans in Greece, this substantial investment certainly positions him for an extended period there.
Looking Ahead to the 2026 Australian Open
Looking ahead, Djokovic is gearing up for the 2026 Australian Open, which he has won ten times. He currently shares the record for the most Grand Slam singles victories with Margaret Court at 24. Despite facing strong competition from younger players like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner—who have claimed every Grand Slam title since 2024—there are indications that Djokovic remains motivated to reclaim the top spot and secure his 25th title. Tennis commentator Rennae Stubbs believes that Djokovic will meticulously prepare for the upcoming Australian Open, where he has historically performed well.
With Sinner as the defending champion and Alcaraz yet to win the Australian Open, the 2026 tournament promises to be highly competitive. While Djokovic has voiced doubts about his ability to compete with the newer generation over five sets, he previously triumphed against Alcaraz at last year’s tournament, though he ultimately withdrew due to injury against Alexander Zverev in the following round.
