Emotional Tribute to Nikola Pilic
In an emotional moment, Novak Djokovic shed tears while honoring his late mentor, Nikola Pilic, during a tribute at the 2025 Athens Open. Pilic, celebrated for his victory at the 1973 French Open, gained further prominence for establishing the renowned Pilic Academy near Munich, where Djokovic himself trained. Over the years, the two developed a close bond, with Pilic acting as a paternal figure in Djokovic’s life. Unfortunately, Pilic passed away on September 22, 2025, in Croatia, and Djokovic released a heartfelt tribute, expressing how crucial Pilic was in shaping his career and personal life.
Tribute During the Tournament
The tribute took place during the ongoing tournament, which this year is hosted in Athens—an event owned by Pilic’s family after relocating from Belgrade. As Djokovic spoke, he became visibly emotional, explaining:
“Niki was more than just a coach and mentor to me; he was family. I owe so much of who I am today to him. He left us a few months ago, and I ask for your support and patience as we honor his legacy.”
He emphasized Pilic’s remarkable coaching achievements, notably leading three different nations—Germany, Serbia, and Croatia—to five Davis Cup titles, highlighting:
“He is the most successful Davis Cup coach in history, and what he accomplished will forever stand unmatched.”
Focus on the Tournament
Facing Nuno Borges later that day, Djokovic managed to secure a spot in the semifinals despite not performing at his peak. With his sights set on a potential final against Lorenzo Musetti—who is competing against Sebastian Korda for a semifinal berth—Djokovic remains focused on his goals. The Chengdu Open’s runner-up is eyeing a title in Athens to solidify his place in the upcoming ATP Finals. However, should Djokovic opt out, Musetti will automatically qualify, a decision the seven-time ATP Finals champion is expected to announce after this tournament concludes.
