Novak Djokovic, the acclaimed tennis champion renowned for his record 24 Grand Slam titles, is diversifying his portfolio by partnering with former Formula 1 racers Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen to invest in the French football team Le Mans. The acquisition, announced by the club on Friday, sees Djokovic and his fellow sports stars joining a consortium of investors that includes OutField, a Latin American sports investment firm, as well as Georgios Frangulis, the CEO of OakBerry and partner of tennis star Aryna Sabalenka.

Le Mans President Thierry Gomez expressed excitement about the involvement of such high-caliber athletes, noting:

“The uniqueness of this fund also lies in its contribution from high-level athletes. Novak Djokovic, Felipe Massa, and Kevin Magnussen will be part of the adventure.”

While the terms of the investment were not disclosed, the involvement of these notable sports figures highlights a growing trend of athletes branching into team ownership and investment within various sports.

Profiles of the Investors

Djokovic, at 38, stands as a formidable figure in tennis, with a staggering 100 career titles to his name. His co-investor Massa enjoyed an impressive F1 career, achieving 11 victories and 41 podium finishes, and narrowly missing the 2008 championship in a dramatic season finale. Magnussen, 32, who has participated in nearly 200 F1 races, had a commendable stint but was not retained by the Haas team at the end of last season.

Le Mans Football Club

Le Mans, which is situated in the northwestern part of France, is celebrating its 40th anniversary as a football club. The team’s league season is set to kick off on August 9. Known for its rich sporting history, Le Mans also hosts the prestigious annual 24-hour endurance car race, further spotlighting the city’s sporting culture.
