Noel Mikaelian Questions Jake Paul’s Intentions and Skills Ahead of Potential Bout

Noel Mikaelian Questions Jake Paul’s Intentions

Noel Mikaelian, a contender for the WBC cruiserweight title, has openly expressed skepticism regarding Jake Paul’s true intentions to face him in the boxing ring. In a recent conversation with sport.de, Mikaelian remarked,

“He’s not even a B-level boxer.”

This statement came in response to the social media sensation’s rising profile in the sport.

Title Shot Controversy

Mikaelian, who previously defeated Badou Jack to capture the coveted WBC belt, revealed that reports surfaced indicating Paul’s camp sought to circumvent him in the title challenger lineup to secure a match against Jack instead. He recounted a phone call from his promoter, Don King, who conveyed that Paul was willing to pay Mikaelian to forgo his title shot, a claim that was later denied by Paul himself.

Mikaelian clarified,

“No official deal ever came to me. Don called and mentioned an offer for step-aside money, but I never received anything formal.”

He reiterated that there was never any direct approach to persuade him to delay his rematch with Jack or allow Paul to contend for the title.

Connections and Skepticism

The 29-3 record holder stated he has connections in Paul’s camp, including a friendship with Paul’s former trainer, which led him to believe the YouTube star was not genuinely interested in fighting him.

“I know Jake isn’t looking to box me, but perhaps he sees a more favorable matchup with Badou Jack,”

Mikaelian suggested.

Critique of Paul’s Boxing Skills

Dismissing Paul’s boxing prowess, Mikaelian critiqued the influencer’s rise through unorthodox and exhibition-style fights, stating,

“It’s all part of a marketing strategy. He stays relevant in the discussions by just managing to survive in fights against established names.”

If a matchup were to eventually occur, Mikaelian feels it would heavily favor him, declaring,

“Jake has improved, but he’s still not a true B-level boxer.”

He also raised concerns about the authenticity of Paul’s recent victory over former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., stating,

“Chavez appeared to be holding back in their last round.”

Respect for Promotional Skills

Despite his criticisms, Mikaelian acknowledged Paul’s promotional acumen, admitting,

“He’s become one of the best promoters in the sport. You have to respect his ability to generate revenue.”
