Montreal Canadiens Make a Bold Move
Montreal Canadiens’ general manager Kent Hughes made a bold move during the draft by acquiring Noah Dobson, a talented right-shot defenseman who had just become available on the trading block. This acquisition required Hughes to part with two first-round selections and promising forward Emil Heineman, but after 68 games with the Canadiens, it appears to be a wise investment.
Dobson’s Impact on the Team
Dobson has been instrumental in addressing the Canadiens’ need for depth among NHL-ready right-side defensemen. As of now, he has tallied an impressive 45 points this season, putting him on track to finish with 54, a significant increase compared to his previous year’s performance with the New York Islanders.
Defensive Contributions
While Hughes was drawn to Dobson’s offensive prowess, his contributions extend beyond the scoresheet. Currently, Dobson ranks second in the NHL for blocked shots, with a total of 163—only two behind Jake McCabe of the Toronto Maple Leafs. If he maintains his current pace, he could reach 197 blocked shots by season’s end, a notable rise from his previous total of 126.
Room for Improvement
In addition to his defensive efforts, Dobson has improved his plus/minus rating to plus-10, marking a stark contrast to the minus-16 he recorded last season with the Islanders. However, there remains potential for growth in his defensive game. Standing at 6 feet 4 inches and weighing 200 pounds, Dobson could utilize his size more effectively, as he has only registered 45 hits so far this season, ranking 14th on the team. Last year, he managed 84 hits, and given that the Canadiens aren’t known for their physical play, his contributions in this area would be welcomed.
Coaching and Future Prospects
Furthermore, enhancing his physicality in net-front situations could bolster his effectiveness, especially in terms of disrupting the opposing team’s sightlines. Despite some areas needing improvement, it’s clear that Dobson is flourishing under Martin St-Louis’ coaching philosophy, making his season with the Canadiens a notable success.
