Wolverines Dominate Nittany Lions
In a commanding performance on Thursday night, Nimari Burnett achieved a personal best of 31 points, spearheading the second-ranked Michigan Wolverines to a decisive 110-69 victory against the Penn State Nittany Lions. The triumph advanced Michigan’s remarkable season record to 21-1, setting a new benchmark for the program and extending their winning streak to seven games. This win has placed them in a tie for the top spot in the Big Ten alongside fifth-ranked Illinois, boasting an impressive 11-1 conference record.
Penn State’s Ongoing Struggles
On the other hand, Penn State’s struggles continued as they dropped to 10-13, with only one win in their last 11 attempts, landing them at the bottom of the Big Ten standings. Despite Freddie Dilione V‘s notable contribution of 19 points, the Nittany Lions could not recover after an early 15-point scoring spree by Michigan. Teammates Josh Reed and Melih Tunca chipped in with 15 points each.
Michigan’s Depth and Dominance
Michigan’s depth was on full display, with Morez Johnson adding 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds, while both Trey McKenney and L.J. Cason also contributed 12 points each. Aday Mara not only scored 11 points but also showcased his defensive prowess with a career-high six blocks.
The Wolverines dominated the game from the outset, leading by a staggering 56-24 at halftime, bolstered by an impressive shooting percentage of 66% from the field and sinking 7 of their 13 attempts from beyond the arc. They took advantage of their size inside, scoring a significant portion of their points in the paint and securing 15 second-chance points. This victory marked the eighth time this season that Michigan surpassed the 100-point threshold and the eighth time they won by over 40 points, showcasing their potent offense and solidifying their momentum following recent victories against ranked opponents like then-No. 7 Michigan State and then-No. 5 Nebraska.
Looking Ahead
Looking ahead, Penn State will be preparing to face USC at home this coming Sunday, while Michigan has a challenging match-up against Ohio State on the same day.
