Nikita Grebenkin Reflects on Trade and Fan Interaction, Shuts Down Instagram Amid Messages from Maple Leafs Supporters

Nikita Grebenkin’s Career Transition

A significant moment in a young hockey player’s career approaches, as Nikita Grebenkin prepares to face off against his former team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, for the first time since his trade to the Philadelphia Flyers nearly a year ago. In an interview with TSN’s Mark Masters, Grebenkin opened up about his transition from the Maple Leafs and the overwhelming attention he received from the team’s fanbase following his departure.

The Trade and Early Impact

The trade that sent Grebenkin, alongside a first-round draft choice, to Philadelphia in exchange for veteran forward Scott Laughton marked a pivotal change in his journey. The 2022 NHL Draft saw Toronto selecting Grebenkin as the 135th pick, where he quickly made an impact on the Toronto Marlies, contributing 10 points in just 13 games.

Memorable Moments and Fan Connection

His preseason performance in September 2024 included a memorable altercation with Adam Gaudette of the Ottawa Senators that showcased his competitive spirit, prompting him to rally the crowd’s enthusiasm immediately post-fight. This made him a fan favorite due to his vibrant personality, as noted by Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews, who described him as fun-loving and sociable off the ice.

Grebenkin’s NHL debut on November 20, 2024, also left a mark. Following the game, his humorous take on receiving crucial gameplay advice went viral, earning him a place in the hearts of Leafs supporters. However, on March 7, 2025, his journey in Toronto came to an end with the trade to Philly.

Challenges and Current Season

Following the upheaval, Grebenkin faced an influx of messages from Leafs fans, leading him to make the difficult choice of shutting down his Instagram account.

“I enjoy connecting with people, and it’s tough when you receive a multitude of messages and can’t respond to each one,”

he explained.

This current season with the Flyers has seen Grebenkin tally four goals and eight assists over 46 games. In the recent matchup against his old team, Grebenkin played 8:44 minutes and ended the game with a minus-1 rating as the Flyers won 3-2 in overtime.
