Nico Daws, a 24-year-old goaltender for the New Jersey Devils, has developed a solid understanding of the professional hockey landscape despite still being early in his career. After participating in his fifth training camp with the team, Daws shared insights with The Hockey News about his journey in hockey thus far, which includes 98 appearances in the American Hockey League (AHL) and 52 in the NHL. His impressive performance during the 2022-23 season earned him a spot in the AHL All-Star Classic, and he notably impressed in the NHL Stadium Series at MetLife Stadium in 2024, where he made 45 saves in a crucial win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

“Early on, I often questioned whether I truly belonged in this league,”
he noted.
“Now, I feel like I’m developing both on and off the ice. It’s been a positive change for me.”

“There are many tough lessons along the way, and I believe I’ve learned a lot, but there’s always room for improvement.”

Looking ahead as he enters training camp, Daws is aware of the team’s goaltending strategy, which now includes seasoned veterans Jacob Markstrom and Jake Allen, the latter of whom was recently signed by the Devils. While Daws respects Allen’s prowess and character, he also faces uncertainty regarding his own path with the organization. Being on a one-way contract worth $850,000 for the upcoming season, he will need to clear waivers if the Devils assign him to their AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets. This situation poses a risk, as another NHL club could claim him if they decide to waive him.

“I focus on what I can control—being ready for the season. Whatever happens, happens.”
