Nico Ali Walsh Leads Coalition to Protect Muhammad Ali Act Amid TKO’s Legislative Push in Boxing

Introduction

In a bold step to defend the integrity of boxing regulations, Nico Ali Walsh, the grandson of the iconic Muhammad Ali, announced on Thursday the creation of a coalition focused on safeguarding the Muhammad Ali American Boxing Reform Act. This initiative, known as the Ali Act Preservation Alliance, has gathered support from over 30 prominent figures and organizations within the professional boxing realm.

Formation of the Alliance

The formation of this alliance comes at a crucial time, as efforts led by TKO, a significant player behind the scenes, aim to amend the existing Ali Reform Act and establish a new framework known as the Muhammad Ali Revival Act. Notably, this legislative effort made impressive strides last month when it successfully passed through the United States House of Representatives and is now set to proceed to the Senate. If it garners adequate support, it will eventually reach President Donald Trump for signing into law.

Concerns Over Proposed Changes

The Ali Act Preservation Alliance raises alarms that the proposed Ali Revival Act could inadvertently foster monopolistic practices within the sport, as it seeks to eliminate the existing division between boxing promoters and sanctioning bodies. One potential outcome of this shift is the establishment of a Unified Boxing Organization (UBO) under Zuffa Boxing’s control, mirroring structural dynamics similar to those of the UFC, which could have serious implications for the sport’s athletes.

According to the alliance, granting TKO substantial governance over professional boxing threatens the financial well-being of fighters, who currently earn a substantial share—up to 80%—of the revenues generated from their bouts. In contrast, mixed martial artists in the UFC reportedly receive less than 20% of event revenues, raising concerns about the financial structures that would emerge should these regulatory changes be implemented.

Health Risks and Weight Classes

Moreover, Zuffa Boxing’s approach includes recognition of only a fraction of traditional weight classes utilized in boxing, which could compel fighters to engage in unsafe weight-cutting practices, further heightening health risks.

Nico Ali Walsh’s Opposition

Nico Ali Walsh expressed his staunch opposition to modifying the Muhammad Ali Act, asserting the historical significance it holds in protecting boxers. “As an Ali, I’m completely against altering the Muhammad Ali Act. My grandfather fought for it to protect fighters from getting screwed over. Remove it, and promoters take control while fighters get paid less. Keep the act and protect the fighters who put their lives on the line,” he emphasized.

Legislative Context

The backdrop of this legislation comes as the UFC grapples with a series of antitrust lawsuits addressing allegations of anti-competitive behavior, which has raised red flags among major boxing stakeholders who fear a similar trajectory in their sport. The current Ali Reform Act is pivotal; it prohibits coercive contracts, mitigates potential conflicts of interest, and mandates financial transparency for promoters, ensuring that fighters receive equitable treatment while safeguarding their rights and interests.
