Nicklas Backstrom’s Return to Hockey
Veteran NHL center Nicklas Backstrom is set to reignite his hockey journey in Sweden as he joins Brynas IF, marking his return to the ice following a year-long hiatus necessitated by a persistent hip injury. The Swedish team made the announcement on Monday, indicating that the 37-year-old would be part of their roster for the upcoming season after his contract with the Washington Capitals lapsed this summer.
Backstrom’s Enthusiasm
Backstrom expressed his enthusiasm about rejoining Brynas, the club where he began his professional career, stating:
“I have always felt that I would like to represent Brynas again someday if the opportunity arose. After undergoing rehab and being away from the game for almost two seasons, I feel very charged and full of energy to contribute to the club’s future successes.”
Medical Journey and Career Highlights
The journey back to competitive hockey for Backstrom involved significant medical procedures. In June 2022, he underwent hip resurfacing surgery to address longstanding issues that sidelined him. By September 2023, he reported feeling markedly improved as he approached training activities.
Before his extended absence, Backstrom played over 1,200 games in the NHL, accumulating more than 1,100 points and playing a pivotal role in the Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup triumph.
Capitals’ Acknowledgment
Following his departure, the Capitals publicly acknowledged Backstrom’s contributions, expressing gratitude for his dedication and wishing him well in his new chapter in Sweden.
