In a thrilling encounter on Sunday night in Salt Lake City, Nick Schmaltz secured a dramatic 4-3 win for the Utah Mammoth against the Los Angeles Kings by netting his second goal during overtime. The decisive moment occurred just one minute and 46 seconds into the extra period when Schmaltz, supported by defenseman Mikhail Sergachev in a 2-on-1 break, managed to squeeze a snap shot past the legs of Kings’ goalie Darcy Kuemper.

Despite Los Angeles dominating the initial moments of overtime, nearly clinching victory with a shot from Alex Laferriere that hit the post, it was the Mammoth who triumphed thanks to a successful faceoff by Kevin Stenlund against Quinton Byfield, paving the way for Schmaltz’s winning strike, which marked his seventh game-winning goal of the season.
The game had been tightly contested throughout, with Artemi Panarin bringing the Kings level with just 3:30 left in regulation after scoring his 25th goal of the season from a distance on the far right side, which slipped past Utah’s goalie Karel Vejmelka. Schmaltz’s goals on the night raised his personal best to 26 for the season, matching his total of 63 points achieved during the 2024-25 campaign.
