NHL Waiver Wire Update
As NHL teams finalize their rosters, a significant wave of players has hit the waiver wire. A total of 22 athletes from franchises like the Carolina Hurricanes, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, San Jose Sharks, and Winnipeg Jets are now available for claims until October 1 at 2 p.m. ET. Should they go unclaimed, these players will be eligible to join American Hockey League (AHL) teams.
Notable Players on Waivers
Among the notable names on waivers are Gavin Bayreuther, Noel Gunler, Tyson Jost, and Ryan Suzuki from Carolina, and Clark Bishop, Dryden Hunt, and Sam Morton from Calgary. Each player has until the deadline for other NHL teams to decide whether to bring them on board.
Player Highlights
Tyson Jost, 27, has a notable background with 495 NHL games under his belt, including a brief stint with the Hurricanes where he contributed four goals and nine points last season. He also played 14 games with the Chicago Wolves, notching another nine points. During the preseason, he managed to secure an assist in four outings.
From Calgary, Sam Morton, just 26 years old, has only one NHL appearance but fought for a spot in the Flames’ lineup. He managed to score once in four preseason games, earning coach Ryan Huska’s praise for his intensity and determination on the ice. In contrast, Dryden Hunt has a more extensive experience with 235 NHL games played.
Goalie Updates
In the goalie department, Matt Tomkins, aged 31, recorded a commendable 3-3 record across six NHL games with the Tampa Bay Lightning last season. He was recognized for his participation with the Syracuse Crunch, where he received the Harry ‘Hap’ Holmes Memorial Award as the AHL goalie with the fewest goals allowed in the 2024-25 season. This preseason, he played nearly 88 minutes for the Oilers, posting a 3.41 goals-against average.
For the New York Islanders, goaltender Marcus Hogberg, 30, showcased his skills in 15 games last season and has started strong this preseason save percentage-wise, having stopped 27 shots across two games.
Other Notable Moves
Brendan Brisson, who turned 23, moved to the New York Rangers in March after playing predominantly in the AHL, where he racked up 25 points over 61 games. He didn’t make much impact in the preseason, finishing with a minus-2 rating over two games.
Anthony Richard, 28, also hit the waiver wire after contributing six points in his brief tenure with the Flyers last season.
In a noteworthy move, the San Jose Sharks picked up Oskar Olausson, a right winger who previously played for the Colorado Avalanche. Despite being a first-round draft pick in 2021, Olausson has yet to break through in the NHL after just four games.
Market Insights
Surprisingly, all 22 players who went on waivers on September 29 cleared, which included names like Nicolas Aube-Kubel and Kevin Gravel, indicating a tight market as teams make critical last-minute roster decisions.
