NHL Unveils Pirate-Themed Outdoor Game for Gasparilla Celebration in Tampa

NHL Outdoor Matchup Announcement

The NHL’s upcoming outdoor matchup, set for January 27, 2026, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, will see the Tampa Bay Lightning face off against the Boston Bruins. This highly-anticipated event marks the league’s 45th outdoor game since the inaugural event in the 2003-04 season.

Event Details and Theme

Uniquely tied to Tampa’s beloved Gasparilla parade, which kicks off on Saturday, the game promises a festive and immersive experience. The design surrounding the rink will be inspired by a pirate treasure map, adorned with hockey-specific landmarks that pay homage to player contributions. Notable examples include “Brayden’s Point of No Return,” named after Lightning forward Brayden Point, and “McDonagh’s Marsh,” in recognition of defenseman Ryan McDonagh.

Enhancing the Atmosphere

NHL President of Content and Events, Steve Mayer, detailed the elaborate setup that includes numerous props to enhance the atmosphere. “We have props everywhere,” Mayer stated, mentioning the inclusion of 120 barrels and an elaborate shipwreck scene featuring the logos and names of both participating teams. The NHL will even feature live pirates during the game to further embrace the Gasparilla spirit.

Weather Precautions

In an effort to mitigate weather-related disruptions to the ice conditions, the league is taking precautions by constructing the rink within a massive air-conditioned structure, measuring 34 feet in height and spanning 240 feet in length.

Historical Context

Historically, the NHL has staged 44 outdoor games across various iconic venues, including Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium. This occasion will be particularly special, as it represents the first time an outdoor NHL game is being held in Florida. Notably, this game follows another outdoor event, the Winter Classic, which took place earlier in the month between the New York Rangers and the Florida Panthers at loanDepot park in Miami.
